What is an eSIM, how does it work and why is it the easiest way to get online abroad? Everything frequent travelers need to know, from choosing a plan to activation.
You land after a long flight, switch off airplane mode and... nothing. Or worse: a text from your home carrier saying roaming now costs you a small fortune per day. That moment is exactly why so many frequent travelers have switched to an eSIM. But what is an eSIM, really, and how does it help when you travel abroad? Here is everything you need to know. ✈️
An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a SIM card that is built into your phone. Instead of a small plastic card you push into a tray, the chip is soldered onto the phone's board at the factory. It does the same job as a physical SIM: it tells a mobile network who you are and which plan you are allowed to use.
The big difference is that an eSIM is programmable. You don't need to visit a shop or wait for a card in the mail. You download a "profile" from a provider, and your phone is ready to connect. That makes an eSIM card for international travel something you can buy from your couch the evening before your trip.
Most recent phones support it, including iPhone XS and newer, Google Pixel 3 and newer and recent Samsung Galaxy models. Check our list of compatible devices to be sure about yours.
So how does an eSIM work in practice? In short:
1. You buy a plan from an eSIM provider, for example a data plan for your destination. 2. You receive an activation code, usually as a QR code by email or inside an app. 3. Your phone downloads the profile over wifi or mobile data. The profile contains the network details and your plan. 4. At your destination, the eSIM connects to a local partner network, just like a local SIM would.
Your phone can store several profiles and you choose which one to use for data. Your home SIM can stay active for calls and texts, so people can still reach you on your normal number. Want the technical deep dive? Read How do eSIMs work?.
With a travel eSIM you pick exactly what you need: a few GB for a long weekend, a larger bundle for two weeks, or an Unlimited plan for heavy use. You can buy for one country, a whole region like Europe, or go worldwide with a Global plan. Ran out of data? You simply top up, no new card needed.

No hunting for a SIM kiosk at arrivals, no passport copies at a phone shop, no tiny SIM tool you always lose. And no risk of dropping your home SIM somewhere between a hotel room and a taxi. You install the eSIM before you leave and you are online the moment you land.
It also helps you avoid surprise bills. Roaming with your home plan can get expensive fast outside your home zone. With a prepaid international eSIM you know the price upfront. More on that in how to avoid roaming charges.
Most phones can store several eSIM profiles at once and use one or two at the same time. That is great for travelers who visit different places:
Keep your home line for calls and SMS. Use a travel eSIM for data abroad. Store the eSIM of your next trip already, and switch when you arrive.
There are roughly three types of eSIM for international travel:
| Type | Best for | Watch out for | |---|---|---| | Local (one country) | Trips to a single destination | Stops working when you cross a border | | Regional (for example Europe or Asia) | Road trips and multi-country trips | Check that every country on your route is included | | Global | Frequent travelers and long trips | Usually a higher price per GB than local plans |
Some plans only include data, others also include a phone number with calls and SMS. See eSIMs with a phone number if you want that.
When you look for the best eSIM for international travel, check these points:
Coverage: which networks does the plan use in your destination? JamboSim shows the partner networks on every destination page. Data amount and validity: a plan that lasts 7 days is no good for a 3 week trip. Fair use on Unlimited plans: our Unlimited plans include 3 GB of high speed data per day, after that the speed drops to about 1 Mbps until local midnight. Hotspot is allowed. Top ups: can you add data easily when you need more? Support: is there help available when something doesn't work? Phone compatibility: your phone must support eSIM and must not be carrier locked.
1. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked. 2. Buy your plan and open the QR code or install link. 3. On iPhone go to Settings Mobile Data Add eSIM. On Android go to Settings Network & internet SIMs Add eSIM. 4. Scan the QR code, or tap install in the JamboSim app for iPhone or Android. 5. Give the eSIM a name, for example "Travel". 6. At your destination, set the eSIM as your mobile data line and turn on data roaming for it.
Tip: install the eSIM at home over wifi, and only switch it on when you arrive. A full walkthrough with screenshots is in our setup guide.
Label your lines clearly, such as "Home" and "Travel", so you don't mix them up. Turn off data roaming on your home SIM to avoid accidental charges. Don't delete an eSIM you still need. Many QR codes can only be used once. Keep WhatsApp on your own number. WhatsApp stays linked to your home number, even when you use travel data. Check your usage in the app so you can top up in time.

Yes. That is one of the main reasons eSIMs exist. As long as your phone supports eSIM and is not carrier locked, you can install a travel eSIM and use local networks abroad without swapping cards.
It depends on your trip. For one country a local plan is usually cheapest. For several countries a regional plan is easier, and for frequent travelers a global plan saves the hassle of buying a new eSIM for every trip. Compare coverage, validity and price on our destinations page.
Most phones can store several eSIM profiles, often up to eight or more, depending on the model. Usually only one or two can be active at the same time. You can switch between them in your phone settings whenever you want.
Yes. Your home SIM stays in your phone, so your number keeps working for calls and texts where your home plan allows it. The travel eSIM only handles your data.
An international eSIM makes travel simpler: no plastic cards, no roaming shocks and internet as soon as you land. Find your destination on JamboSim and get connected before you even pack your bags. 🌍
