Land, switch off flight mode and you are online. How eSIMs work for travel, which plan fits your route, and how to set up before you fly.
You land, switch off flight mode, and your phone just works. Maps load, WhatsApp pings, your Uber is already on its way. No hunting for a SIM kiosk in arrivals, no paperclip, no roaming bill waiting at home. That is what an eSIM does for a trip, and once you have travelled this way it is hard to go back.
Here is how eSIM technology changes international travel, what it actually is, and how to get set up before your next flight.
An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a tiny chip that is already built into your phone. Instead of sliding a plastic card into a tray, you download a mobile plan onto that chip, usually by scanning a QR code or tapping install in an app.
A few things make it great for travel:
Nothing to swap. Your home SIM stays where it is. Several plans on one phone. Most modern phones can store multiple eSIM profiles, so you can keep a plan for Japan, one for Europe and your home line side by side. Instant delivery. You buy online and get your eSIM by email within a minute.

A few years ago, travel data meant one of two things: expensive roaming from your home carrier, or a queue at an airport shop with a passport and a bit of luck. Both still exist. Neither makes much sense anymore.
With an eSIM you can:
Install before you leave home, on your own WiFi, with no time pressure. Be online the moment you land, which matters when you need a taxi, a hotel address or a message to the people picking you up. Keep your own number for calls and texts, because your home SIM stays active next to the travel eSIM. Skip roaming surprises, because you pay a fixed price upfront.
For digital nomads and frequent flyers this is a big shift. Crossing a border becomes a few taps in Settings instead of a shopping errand.
Install at home, turn the eSIM line on when you arrive, and you are online before you reach passport control. No arrivals hall detour, no language barrier at a phone shop.
Roaming bills are famous for nasty surprises. A travel eSIM works the other way around: you choose a data amount and a number of days, you pay once, and that is it. No hidden fees, no bill shock when you come home.

JamboSim plans connect to established local networks in each destination, often with 4G and 5G where available. Every country page shows which networks you use, so you know before you buy.
Heading to Thailand now and Italy in spring? You can keep both eSIMs installed and switch between them. Many travellers keep their eSIMs on the phone and simply top up the next time.
No card, no packaging, no shipping. Small thing, but it adds up across millions of trips.
This is the question that matters most, and the answer depends on your route.
| Your trip | Best fit | Example | |---|---|---| | One country | Country plan | USA eSIM, Japan eSIM | | Several countries in one region | Regional plan | Europe, Asia, Southeast Asia | | Road trip across the USA and Canada | North America plan | North America | | Multiple continents | Global plan | Global eSIM |
A quick rule of thumb: if you cross more than one border, a regional plan is usually simpler and often cheaper than stacking country plans. And if your trip jumps continents, the Global plan saves you from juggling several eSIMs.
North America is one of the most popular eSIM destinations, and for good reason. Roaming from outside the region is often pricey, and local prepaid SIMs can come with activation hoops.
In the USA the big national networks are T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon. In Canada they are Bell, Rogers and Telus. With a travel eSIM you get data on one of these established networks without signing a contract or visiting a store. Check the exact network for your plan on the USA page before you buy.
Doing both countries? Think Seattle to Vancouver, or New York to Montreal. The North America plan covers the border crossing on one eSIM.
An eSIM app turns plan management into something you can do from a sun lounger. With the JamboSim app for iPhone and Android you can:
Buy and install a new eSIM in a few taps Check how much data you have left Top up when you need more Find your install details again, any time
1. Check your phone. Most iPhones from the XS onwards and many recent Android phones support eSIM. Your phone also needs to be carrier unlocked. See our compatible devices list if you are unsure.
2. Pick your plan. Country, regional or global, based on your route. Buy it now and schedule it for your travel date if you like.
3. Install at home. Scan the QR code from your email, or install directly in the app. Do this on WiFi, a day or two before you fly.
4. Switch on when you land. Turn on the eSIM line and enable data roaming for that line. Yes, data roaming on the eSIM is normal and does not cost extra: it is how the eSIM connects to the local network.
5. Enjoy the trip. Keep your home line on for calls and texts if you want, and use the eSIM for data.

Can I keep my WhatsApp number with an eSIM? Yes. WhatsApp is linked to your account, not your data connection. Your chats and number stay the same when you use data from a travel eSIM.
Do I lose my home number? No. Your home SIM stays in your phone. You can keep it on for calls and texts while the eSIM handles your data.
When should I install my eSIM? Ideally at home, a day or two before departure, while you have good WiFi. Most plans only start counting days once they connect in the destination.
Can I use my data as a hotspot? On most plans, yes. Share your connection with a laptop or a travel buddy.
What if I travel to several countries? Choose a regional plan such as Europe or Asia, or the Global plan if your trip spans continents.
eSIM technology takes one of the most annoying parts of travel, getting online abroad, and makes it almost invisible. You install before you go, land connected, pay a clear price and keep your own number.
Ready for your next trip? Find your destination and get your eSIM in under a minute. Jambo, and safe travels!
