Most travellers use between 500 MB and 1 GB of mobile data per day abroad. Light users who mainly need maps, messaging and boarding passes get by on 3 GB for a week. If you stream video, upload holiday reels or use your phone as a hotspot, plan on 1.5–2 GB per day instead. Drag the sliders above and the calculator turns your daily habits into a realistic trip total.
We'll multiply your daily usage by this - so you see what you really need.
Drag each slider to match how long you typically spend on each category per day.

Instagram, TikTok, X, Facebook, Snapchat

Zoom, Google Meet, Teams, FaceTime

YouTube, Netflix, Spotify, Twitch, mobile games

WhatsApp, Telegram, iMessage, Signal

Maps, Uber, delivery apps, AI chat
For each category we use a realistic average data rate (in GB per hour). Multiply that by your daily hours and your trip length - that's it. No magic.
These are conservative averages - real usage depends on video quality, network, and how chatty your group chat is. When in doubt, round up. 🍹

Estimates only - your real usage may vary. How JamboSim works
Choose how many days you will be abroad. The calculator uses this to turn a daily estimate into a total for the whole trip.
Estimate the hours per day you spend on social media, video, music, messaging and navigation. Be honest - most people underestimate video.
You get an estimated total in GB, plus the monthly and daily average, so you can compare plans quickly.
Tap “Find my plan” and we show only the JamboSim eSIM plans with enough data for your destination.
These are the averages our calculator works with, based on typical mobile settings.
| Google Maps navigation | ~5 MB per hour |
|---|---|
| WhatsApp / iMessage chat | ~10 MB per hour |
| Instagram or TikTok scrolling | ~150 MB per hour |
| Spotify streaming (normal quality) | ~70 MB per hour |
| WhatsApp video call | ~300 MB per hour |
| Netflix or YouTube (standard definition) | ~700 MB per hour |
| Netflix or YouTube (HD) | ~2 GB per hour |
For a one-week trip, 3 GB is enough for maps, messaging, email and light social media. If you stream video or share a lot of photos and videos, 5–10 GB is more comfortable. Heavy users or anyone tethering a laptop should look at 20 GB or an unlimited plan.
Navigation is surprisingly light: around 5 MB per hour, so even three hours of driving a day is about 15 MB. Downloading offline maps before you travel drops that to almost nothing.
Yes, for most travellers. 1 GB per day covers maps, messaging, email, social media and the occasional video call. It is not enough for daily video streaming in HD or for using your phone as a hotspot.
Roughly 700 MB per hour in standard definition and up to 2 GB per hour in HD. Watching one HD film abroad can use more data than a whole week of maps and messaging.
Your data simply stops working - there are no surprise roaming bills. You can buy a top-up for the same eSIM in your JamboSim account in a couple of minutes and keep the same phone number and setup.
Voice calls use about 15 MB per hour, so they are very cheap on data. Video calls are much heavier, at around 300 MB per hour.
It is an estimate based on average usage per hour at normal quality settings. Real usage depends on your device, video quality and how many apps refresh in the background, so we recommend adding around 20% buffer to your result.
