APN stands for “Access Point Name” and refers to the settings on your smartphone that are used to connect to the cellular network. An APN defines the network address through which your smartphone sends and receives data.
Every mobile operator has its own APN, which includes specific settings such as the access point name, the protocol, the authentication method and other parameters.
The APN settings are important to establish a correct data connection on your smartphone. If the APN settings are not configured properly, it may lead to problems such as mobile internet not working, MMS sending failure or other connectivity issues.
Follow the step-by-step guide below to set the APN settings.
Make sure your SIM card or eSIM is installed and switched on.
You get the values for your APN settings from your provider.
a label for you only. Type something you recognise, for example "JamboSim", so you can find the profile again later.
the only value that really matters. It has to match your plan exactly, in lowercase, with no spaces before or after it.
almost always empty for travel eSIMs. Leave them blank unless your plan clearly lists values.
filled in automatically by your phone. Never change these by hand, or the profile will not be used.
leave it on "None" unless a username and password are required.
use default, supl for data. Adding mms is only needed if you also send picture messages, which travel eSIMs normally do not support.
"IPv4/IPv6" is the safest choice, because it works on networks that only offer one of the two.
leave it unspecified so your phone can use 4G and 5G as available.
An APN that looks right but does not connect is nearly always one of the items below. Work through them in order, and give the phone about a minute after each change.
Check that the eSIM is the selected SIM for mobile data under Settings, Network and internet, SIMs. On a dual SIM phone your home SIM often keeps the data role.
Turn on data roaming for the eSIM. A travel eSIM connects to a partner network, so without roaming enabled it stays offline even with a perfect APN.
Switch airplane mode on for ten seconds and off again. This forces a fresh network search and applies the new APN.
Look for typing mistakes in the APN. A capital letter, a trailing space or the number one instead of the letter l are the most common causes.
Make sure the new APN profile is actually selected, not just saved. The radio button next to it has to be active.
Check that your plan still has data and validity left. An expired or empty plan shows full signal bars but carries no traffic.
As a last step, remove the extra APN profile you created and restart the phone. Most eSIMs then fall back to their built in settings and connect on their own.
No. One correct APN works for the whole trip, because the eSIM keeps the same data profile while it hops between local partner networks.
No. APN profiles belong to one SIM only. Adding a profile while your travel eSIM is selected leaves your home SIM untouched.
Some manufacturers lock the APN screen while the phone has no network connection, and a few carrier locked devices hide it completely. Restart the phone with the eSIM enabled, and check that the device is unlocked for use with other networks.
Open My eSIMs and select your plan. When a plan needs a manual APN it is shown there, and when nothing is listed the plan configures itself automatically.
